Perioperative Care of Patients with Mental Health Issues
As providers of surgical and anesthesia care in our offices, we need to remain aware of health issues that may affect the delivery of our care. While most of us would be able to appreciate how failure of the major organ systems affect the delivery of care, mental health issues remain not only difficult to quantify and often pose a stigma in society. Mental health issues will affect 3 out of every 5 Canadians at some point in their life. While some of these issues may be minor and require little treatment, some will pose a significant barrier to care. Many of the medications that are used for management affect the CNS and therefore will likely affect the provision of anesthesia care. With this in mind, the content of the 2017 meeting will focus on the perioperative care of patients with mental health issues.
As health care providers, we also face many stresses. We provide surgical care that is both demanding and precise. We operate small businesses that requires multiple balls to be in the air at one time. Staffing, supplies, payroll, scheduling, being on call are just few of these. Careers in dentistry and medicine are notorious for having an adverse effect on the mental health of its providers. Our presentations will also take this aspect of mental health into consideration. I encourage you, and your staff to attend our scientific meeting
